This book was recommended to me but I was less than impressed with the advice offered in the text. It's very wordy and sometimes hard to read. Almost too much information to digest.

Used this a ton as a new doula and midwife assistant. Penny Simpkin's reference book is spot on. A must read for doulas, midwives, and anyone else who supports pregnant women.

As a Dad that has read or browsed most all of the contemporary pregnancy books. This is undoubtably my favorite. It's simple, straight-forward, detailed, yet practical. Designed as a guide for doulas, partners, midwives, and all birthpartners this book is useful to experts and beginners alike. Not only is the information solid and thorough, the presentation is warm and confident. I have memorized the material and found it to be a profound help. Very easy to refer to in a pinch. Thanks Penny -- this is a classic.

My daughter has asked me to be her primary labor coach during her upcoming delivery. It has been many years since my Lamaze days, and I was uncomfortable that a "refresher" course would be insufficient to prepare me for this task.

I found the book to be very helpful. She and I have referred to is numerous times already in preparation for the birth. I plan to take it into the labor room with me.

Very clear illustrations, specially marked "cheat sheets" for quick reference.

The book was recommended in several pregnancy publications from different sources.

My copy is already looking a bit shop-worn, and I expect it to be all but tattered by the time the baby is delivered.

I am going to help my daughter and this book is amazing. My daughter is in New York going to classes. I was learning the same exact information from Yhe Birth Partner. I highly recommend this book.

I highly recommend reading this book before each birth. There are very helpful summary charts at the end of each chapter. I have tabs throughout the book for easy reference while in the hospital. So far, my labors have been quick, but if they were slower, this would be very valuable.
This is one of my favorite books. I've read it probably half a dozen times during my pregnancies and now get to read it again for doula certification. The information is helpful and written in a way that's very enjoyable to read. I'm glad to have this one on my bookshelf again.
