New research strategies in life sciences, an increasing concern about our environment and about the quality of our nutrition together with fast progress in micro-engineering and molecular biology have had a tremendous impact on interdisciplinary science and analytical chemistry. Analytical technologies are driven to reach extreme numbers. Just to give a few examples: over 100,000 samples are processed per day in high-throughput screening laboratories, close to 100,000 recognition elements can be immobilized on a small, single-use chip, 100,000 theoretical plates per column allow for separations in a few seconds. At the other end of the scale, the detection of one molecule is no longer an exotic task and limits of detection below one femtomolar are frequently reached.Despite the fact that such novel approaches create exciting possibilities and the basis for future mainstream approaches, the extent to which established technologies carry the majority of the workload of analytical applications must not be underestimated. As a consequence, the tenth European Conference on Analytical Chemistry, September 6-11, 1998, was planned to have a balanced program of lectures to accommodate a wide spectrum of analytical activities and interests. Plenary lectures covered aspects of Separation Sciences, Micro Fabrication, Quality Assurance and Spectroscopy. Each was followed by three parallel sessions covering the current state-of-the-art in novel as well as established applications and technologies, presented in short lectures. The acceptance and rapid introduction of novel analytical technologies requires a constant and intense dialogue between research groups, application experts, instrument manufacturers and regulatory agencies. The 29 papers that make up this volume are a stimulating contribution to this dialogue.
