Stephen Bodio's Querencia. This has led to a career as a writer on outdoor topics and numerous books, including my latest, Augusts in Africa. Stuff is eaten by dogs, broken by family and friends, sanded down by the wind, frozen by the mountains, lost by the prairie, burnt off by the sun, washed away by the rain. So you are left with dogs, family, friends, sun, rain, wind, prairie and mountains.

Born in Boston, Stephen Bodio wandered into Magdalena, New Mexico, in the 1970s while on his way to Montana and never left. He was accompanied by Betsy Huntington, who was twenty years his senior; the couple had been inseparable from the day they met.

In the late 1970s, Stephen Bodio, a Boston-based writer, amateur naturalist, and falconer, happened into Magdalena, New Mexico, on the way somewhere else. In an era where illiterates like Shaquile O'Neal and Tim Allen hit the top ten list with their inane blather, it was a gift from the Gods to stumble upon this gem. When I put Querencia (kur-en-see-uh) down after having read it in one sitting, I asked myself, 'How in the hell is it that I have never heard of this Bodio character before?'

Steve Bodio is one of America's underrated treasures. "Querencia" is very moving, funny, evocative, and beautifully written, a magnificent and poignant portrait of a time and place, and of a relationship, with all the joy and pain that come from loving someone.

A magnificent book by a genuine human being/Renaissance man. Wonderful accounts of moving into a rural New Mexico town, getting to know those who already lived there, and becoming accepted and one of them. Plus deeply a human account of his partner's illness and passing. Just a wonderfully human book.

I have read several things Bodio has written over the years and enjoyed them very much. I like his honesty and his comfort with his own contradictions, we all have them. Querencia was special to me because I have a little off the grid hide out outside of Magdalena and Bodio gets it right. If I ever bump into him at the Spur I will buy him a cold one.

I just finished Querencia and I think it is a pretty unique book. A memoir, an homage, loose diary..., I don't know. It is for sure a book to show love for your departed love one. I liked it a lot buy I wouldn't recommended it to everybody, or maybe I would. Definitely, if you have even the most superficial interest in the Southwest, you will love it.

This is THE book to give to friends. It's hard to go wrong with this one. Right from the start it makes you smile and keeps you in the loop of the ups and downs of life -though a mighty interesting life, I might say. Animals, nature, people, life. The air we breathe -it's all in this little book.

This is a well written memoir by Mr. Bodio. It is a fast read and kept me interested to the end. I love the descriptions of that area of New Mexico.
Saved a good deal of money on this one for class. Arrived quick and easy to my house cannot believe the excellent quality for this book for this price.
