Grace,
I find it interesting, that there is something about your story and culture that I seem to envy as if I had missed out on something that life has to offer.

Get ready! You are about to embark on an adventure like never before. You are going on a journey to a far away land not so very long ago. A journey you will love every little moment of. A journey full of the treasures, but not of gold or jewels, but of life's experiences, from a very different kind world and culture than you would most likely never know of, or would ever be able to experience without this book, especially in today's modern world. A lifestyle that makes this little story have even more meaning. A story that begins in a time that is now almost gone and a has become a great fading memory quickly slipping into the past.

For me, I felt that this book bridged the gap giving me a better understanding of what it was really like to being a person who was trying to immigrate from China to the U.S.A. after the communists took over.

Grace's story reminded me at times of Pearl S. Buck's, story "Dragon Seed", in the way that it gives an inside look at a family and their life in China.

Yanyan's (Grace`s) story made me envious of not having lived a life like this even with it`s many turmoil's. It made me feel that I had missed out on something that life offers us that can only be gained by enduring and surviving great hardships and becoming stronger for doing so. Who would ever think that a book that someone has written about another place and time would open up a doorway, to so many hidden emotions and a realization of what is a truly good in life and in some ways a lesson (without ever trying to be), on how we should really cherish what we have, especially the most simple things in life like family.

Hold onto this book tightly and hug it. It is special. It will stir emotions and feelings from deep within that you may have never even known you have. It will give you an insight to a time and place only known by those who lived it. A life that we could never truly imagine from a time when living was harder, but in many ways, far less complicated than the life we are accustomed to today here in the United States and offering in many ways, a true realization of the joys that came from a more simple life.

Don't miss out on this wonderful reading experience. You will feel a little more complete afterwards; I guarantee it! I do!

It is a long way from China to Hollywood! Far longer, than you could ever imagine.
Thank you for sharing your story Grace.

I was just browsing for memoirs and came across this book and decided to buy it. I was pleasantly surprised. It's not often you get to read a contemporary memoir from an Asian woman in the entertainment business. I found the stories about her family and life in China were heartwarming. The events that lead to her divorce and relocation to the US a lot of women and/or immigrants can identify with. It takes courage to pick yourself up and keep going. The interesting thing about this book is that the Hollywood part is only a small part of her journey. This book was good because you get a full life story. I've already shared this story with a friend of mine who's going through some of the same issues.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The stories about Grace's different family relationships were funny, sweet and heartwarming.
The beginning of the book where the writer talks about the wall between her and her father was so touching as you knew they both had such a deep love for one another. No matter where you're from, this is the type of book you will find inspiring.
