There is lots of interesting information in this book but unlike some others written about similar content it did not engage me and take me along on the wings of the imagination and make me feel as if I was in the world the author was describing. Perhaps this is a book written for those who already understand the era and the importance of some of the data listed but I bought the book to gain a feel for the period and was disappointed. While it seems well researched I felt I was reading the end notes with listed sources rather than a cohesive narrative.

It is important to know the backgrounds of plant explorers and the plants they worked with. I have read fiction books of some and to find the real stories makes them come alive.
