'Laughing All the Way' is a real insider's look at the many public and private guises in Washington, a place where survival necessitates 'a fine madness and a sense of humor. Howar doesn't really reveal all that much; her loyalty to the Kennedy family and Kissenger is apparent, and her falling out with the LBJ White House does not seem to be taken seriously. People like Gloria Steinem, Katherine Graham, and Barbara Walters walk in and out of the book but don't really come alive. Still, it's an entertaining read.

Howard, 30, whose television potential was spotted by Danny Cohen, the former BBC3 boss and the new controller of BBC1, has been commissioned for two further series. In February he will undertake an arena comedy tour, including two nights at London's O2. He finds the scale of his success "slightly embarrassing, overwhelming". Given his appeal to a young audience, one might assume that Howard is the sort of wired early-adopter who knows every digital shortcut to maximising his fan base. But he doesn't try to give that impression.

I love to shop the super clearance racks. I love attending Faith Chapel and treasure all the friendships my husband and I have made there. Life is short, eat desert first. Love unconditionally. Others named Barbara Bruns Howard. Barbara Bruns Howard. Others with a similar name.

Laughing at myself is what I do best. Lord knows I have had practice, there being no city like Wasington for laughable situations, but it appears to me that I have outdistanced even politicians in my race toward the ridiculous. I wanted to make my mistakes at the top and I have. You may think it simple to play the fool in a town that pursues the activity with unrestrained zeal, but my success was no lucky accident.

I have had to work making my blunders count against strong contenders through four administrations." -from the dust jacket.

If you like first person snippets of history like I do, it's not bad. Barbara Howar is a silly woman and it certainly comes across in her book.

"'The clergy and Elizabeth Arden be damned; nothing is better for the spirit or body than a love affair. It elevates thoughts and flattens stomachs, and while I doubt adultery will replace Billy Graham or the Canadian Air Force exercises, romance made me feel and look a good deal younger. Falling in love with a United States Senator is a splendid ordeal.'

"Here are Barbara Howar's candid observations about herself and about everyone else in Washington from Martha Mitchell to Henry Kissinger.

"'Laughing All the Way' is a real insider's look at the many public and private guises in Washington, a place where survival necessitates 'a fine madness and a sense of humor.'"

Washington itself comes alive, along with the sixties. Howar has a conversational, opinionated tone that keeps you amused page after page.
