The characters, particularly those in the police squad, are engaging, with quirks that make them human and provide depth to their motivations. This story, like most in the series, is rather formulaic and sometimes drags just a bit. But readers will want to stay with the novel to learn how the mystery is finally solved.

This is a series that continues to interest. The plot lines are good and the characters are well drawn and diverse. Looking forward to the next one

Another excellent book in the series. I don't know how it would fare as a standalone, however. Start earlier.

Lots of promising suspects, and the book carries you along on the search for the killer, as it should. Not as much interaction between Slider and Atherton as I'd like, as some of the other detectives get their chance to show off...and the domestic Slider/Joanna scenes aren't memorable. But I think the book totally lives up to its contract, especially in its denouement.

If you like a typical, old fashioned mystery without all the technology of today's police, you will love this. Set in England years ago, you will be captivated by the language and terminnoloy of that time. Just about the time I thought I figured out "who did it?", it took a new twist. This is a book you could give a young teen ager to read for entertainment.

Am working my way through all of the Bill Slider book. They are a very good read and I have never managed to guess the identity of the criminal yet! I really have a hard time putting these Cynthia Harrod Eagles book down once I have started reading them. She is an exceptional author and I think she writes very well, keeps me entertained with her characters and plots.

As always the author puns and tells jokes while telling a convoluted story. Bill Slider shows his talents once again.

I came across one of the Bill Slider mysteries at the library and read it - I immediately got hooked and ordered the omnibuses of the earlier books in the series - this series is one of the few I re-read periodically - I'm amazed at the quality of the writing even though Ms. Harrod-Eagles puts out a new Bill Slider book every year -
I enjoy the Bill Slider Mystery series because of the characters... They are well defined. I particularly like the human qualities they have as they do their detecting... I enjoy this series and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys English mysteries of good quality.... where the characters and the mystery are both good.
