I cursed him and went inside. I cursed her and went upstairs to where I had left MacMan at the girl’s door

I cursed him and went inside. Mary Nunez, starting up the front stairs, retreated towards the kitchen when she saw me, walking backwards, her eyes watching me crazily. I cursed her and went upstairs to where I had left MacMan at the girl’s door. He wouldn’t look at me, so I made it unanimous by cursing him. Gabrielle spent the balance of the afternoon shrieking, begging, and crying for morphine. That evening she made a complete confession

Just when I thought I had reached the end of the mystery Dashiell Hammett kicked off another crazy story arc with a flashback to psychological child abuse and a daring prison escape or a flash forward to a profit-based San Francisco religious cult or an eloping morphine addict. He sure broke a lot of new ground, though.

The story is complex, difficult to remember all the characters. The ending left me confused. The twists and turns are interesting, believable for the most part. Hammett tipped me off as to the identity of the major villain well before the climax. The book is we'll worth reading, partly for the historical setting and jargon. The racist typecasting is embarrassing, but true to the period. This was the first of the Continental Op series that I had read, leaving me confused as to the character of the narrator.

Far different from today's novels, Hammett's work might be difficult for some to be swept away by the narrative. But if one thinks of the film noir classics, Bogart, Cagney, et al., then the dialog snaps as it should, the scenes play with laser-like focus. He writes of a world well known by him, but the motivations of the various characters are same as always: greed, love, revenge, power. Shakespeare's themes in mob attire.

This is one of the best hard-boiled mysteries ever. I prefer his Continental Op stuff over his other writings and that includes Maltese Falcon. This is considered by most his weakest novel but unlike many books one might read the 2nd time it did not lose any of its punch. Today as well as when I was a young teen I read this in one sitting. Terse, to the point, not one wasted word. Think of Hemingway at the peak of his creative powers putting his all into the school of hard-boiled literature. That should give you an inkling of how good this is. Written in 1928 and still rock solid.

This is a good story with several twists and turns that will keep you on your toes. I enjoyed this book but did find the writing a bit confusing at times.

If you like old school, hard boiled crime mystery novels, the Dain Curse, which has some interesting plot turns, is a good one. Written by the master of detective fiction, Dashiell Hammett, the detective without a name, the Continental Op, is the focus of the story as he bruskly solves the mystery.

I came to read this after watching the film version. Both were good but as is usually the case, the book surpassed the film. The story had a way of dragging you in and making you a part of what is happening.
  • Unirtay
Not his best, but if you love the continental op, as we do, enjoyable.
Dashiell Hammett not only helped create the detective novel genre, but his writing style impacted the entire writing profession. Lee Child, Robert Parker, Michael Kennedy et al, can all trace their lineage to him.
