The mystery is finally solved in a bizarrely entertaining way and Dover's admiring fans are once again treated to a prime example of detective work at its worst and funniest

Ships from and sold by the tome tradesman. The mystery is finally solved in a bizarrely entertaining way and Dover's admiring fans are once again treated to a prime example of detective work at its worst and funniest. Porter was a wonderful writer with a genius for creating hilariously eccentric (but strangely believable) characters.

A Wilfred Dover mystery, from the creator of Eddie Brown. Joyce Porter kept alive the flame of the comic crime novel in a time that was inimical to mere entertainment, even in a popular literary form

A Wilfred Dover mystery, from the creator of Eddie Brown. For a start, the town’s only hotel is unlicensed, and there’s not a drop of booze to be had. But almost as alarming are the unmistakable signs that someone is actually out to kill Dover. Joyce Porter kept alive the flame of the comic crime novel in a time that was inimical to mere entertainment, even in a popular literary form. Not for her the pseudo-realism of the mean streets or the hard slog of the police procedural. her books occupy a territory somewhere between satire and farce, and this gives them a flavour quite unique in the history of crime writing.

Joyce Porter's off-beat mysteries featuring Inspector Wilf Dover (the "Shame of Scotland Yard") are treasures. Porter was a craftsman-like writer with a genius for creating characters that are bizarre, but believable - starting, of course, with Inspector Dover himself
