The Sunday Times Geoffrey Toye was for many years a freelance photojournalist, and well-known especially for his highly informed articles on sailing, archery and high-powered air-guns. His first novel, the thriller Diminished Responsibility was a great success, and also appeared in translation abroad, most notably in Germany where it became a best-seller.

Geoffrey Peter Bede Hawkshaw Tozer (5 November 1954 – 21 August 2009) was an Australian classical pianist and composer. A child prodigy, he composed an opera at the age of eight and became the youngest recipient of a Churchill Fellowship award at 13. His career included tours of Europe, America, Australia and China, where he performed the Yellow River Concerto to an estimated audience of 80 million people. In criminal law, diminished responsibility (or diminished capacity) is a potential defense by excuse by which defendants argue that although they broke the law, they should not be held fully criminally liable for doing so, as their mental functions were "diminished" or impaired. Diminished capacity is a partial defense to charges that require that the defendant act with a particular state of mind.

Diminished responsibility, legal doctrine that absolves an accused person of part of the liability for his criminal act if he suffers from such abnormality of mind as to substantially impair his responsibility in committing or being a party to an alleged violation. The doctrine of diminished. Although long a part of Scottish homicide law, England and Wales did not adopt the defense until 1957. Most other countries recognize only mental disease or defect of sufficient degree to sustain a defense of insanity.

John Ballinger's wife had been killed by a drunken driver, and now, barely six months later, his daughter had been murdered by a religious psychopath. For Ballinger, a precision gunsmith making some of the most accurate weapons in the world, the due process of the law was not enough. Police custody would not be adequate protection for his daughter's killer, not if they took him up into the Welsh mountains to locate her grave...

This complex thriller of a mystery is amazingly detailed and extremely well thought out! I only put it down - very reluctantly - to eat and sleep.

But giving this book less than 5 stars would be criminal. Not being into guns and/or hunting, I did tend to skim parts. A great book with painstaking attention to detail. I found it hard to put down.
  • Arith
Very good read

Many twists and turns. Air gun expertise and craftsmanship. Police intuition proves reliable but hard to prove. The killer of the killer is cold hearted.
  • BOND
Interesting plot and characters. A bit too much detail on certain subjects but overall a good read.
