Michael Zinn Lewin (born 1942, Springfield, Massachusetts) is an American writer of mystery fiction perhaps best known for his series about Albert Samson, a distinctly low-keyed, non-hardboiled private detective who plies his trade in Indianapolis, Indiana. Lewin himself grew up in Indianapolis, but after graduating from Harvard and living for a few years in New York City, has lived in England for the last 40 years.

Business is picking up for Indianapolis PI Albert Samson-until three intersecting cases land him on the city’s Most Wanted list Unusually, Albert Samson, Indy’s least successful PI, is working three cases at once: An ecoterrorist group threatens to bomb the city, an obnoxious poet wants help murdering his wife, and a mysterious package needs a courier.

Michael Z. Lewin is the award-winning author of many mystery novels and short stories. Most have been set in and around Indianapolis, Indiana, where he grew up. Albert Samson is a low-key private eye and the stories focus on humane understanding of the cases and problems Samson encounters.

I read this book back in 2005 for my Mystery Readers Group. I decided I might as well use my old report to post as a review.
The story takes place in Philadelphia. Albert Samson is a PI who talks to himself. He’s always making witty asides. There’s an environmentalist group called Scum Front in town who are trying to raise awareness for their cause by planting bombs that are not designed to detonate and then calling a TV station to tell where the bomb is located. Each time it happens people are scared and it causes a ruckus. The police want to catch them. It’s costing a lot of money.
Scum Front has a problem. Someone took one of their unarmed bombs and they don’t know where it is and now someone has the makings for a real bomb. They contact Samson to find the bomb but they are very secretive about what they want. They arrive in costume because they don’t want to be recognized. Samson is hard up and trying to increase his business – so he accepts the assignment. In the process he ends up at risk for adding and abetting.
It’s a story with a lot of twists and of course in the end he saves the day. A quick read and a lot of fun. I’d read more of Samson.

Lewin wrote 8 novels about a bumbling detective called Albert Samson. This, the penultimate horror, has the usual continuity error. Apparently even an editor can't be bothered to wade through. After this one, the author mercifully waited 13 years to resolve the cliffhanger.

If you like absurd plots (in the present book, Samson is hired by terrorists and is surprised to be arrested) and strained but quirky character development, this book is worth reading.

The single great book Lewin penned has a walk-on by Samson but centers around an abrasive Indianapolis police lieutenant, Roy Powder. I've read "Night Cover" many times and highly recommend it.

Midwest detective Albert Samson, who is full of witty comments, slides into apparent crass materialism when he stages a mystery murder for a wealthy woman's guests.

Back at his office, a group of disguised women, who plant disconnected bombs for environmentalist publicity, pay him to locate a stolen bomb. No one wants anyone hurt, and Samson, not particularly macho, hates confrontation, so the plot proceeds with lots of humor.

This was a witty, sarcastic & very funny mystery. Quite enjoyable & I'd like to read more of this author's books.
