A Miss Seeton Mystery. Bell, book, and candle, Miss Seeton announced to the gatepost of Rytham Hall as she began to turn into the drive, and was extremely surprised when the gatepost answered back. Good heavens, Miss Seeton, are you planning to exorcise something? Miss Seeton forgot all about candle auctions, stopped in her tracks, and dropped her umbrella.

A Miss Seeton Mystery. Thanks to Stan Bloomer, and to the chapters she studied in that invaluable reference book Greenfinger Points the Way, Miss Seeton was at least sure now which were weeds, and which weren’t, when she settled to rooting them out. She hoped. Greenfinger had been pointing the way for her since her first days as owner of Sweetbriars-and Stan had been interpreting the sage’s printed words, when she couldn’t make sufficient sense of them-once, that was to say, she had finally managed to make sense of Stan himself.

I was disappointed in this book. The new author of this series has relegated Miss Seeton into a minor role. Mel Forby, the reporter, has taken over the major character’s role. Oh sure, Miss Seeton has the large role in the missing baby episode, and in discovering the revolutionists, albeit unaware of the seriousness of the situation, and her umbrella does play a role in her rescue. But, Mel Forby is the main character in this story – not Miss Seeton.

Another issue I had with this story was that it drug on, and on, and on with Scottish history or pseudo Scottish history. I got bored. Yes, the reader does get a glimpse into the impulsive nature of Scottish weather, and a look at some of the geology features of Scotland, but the series has always been about Miss Seeton and the police’s efforts in trying figuring out her quick-draw sketches in order to solve a murder or a mystery. Plus, the reader always was rewarded with a good laugh at the way in which her umbrella saved the day – stopped a criminal. Not so in this story. There aren’t any good laughs.

The setting is Scotland. Miss Seeton did not seem to be a primary character as in the other books. As usual she stumbled into the lives and activities of criminals. And, she did find the murder victim. But, I felt like she was lost among the other main characters. There were fewer drawings as in previous books which can give readers clues to the murderer. There seemed to be less energy in Miss Seeton Rocks the Cradle as in previous books. However, an enjoyable read.

If you enjoy little old lady Brit detective stories, this series is for you. Formulaic and totally improbable, yet such fun.

Always enjoy a Miss Seeton novel. Knew there would be plot twists but am always pleasantly surprised that I never guessed just what the twist would be. Sheryl Jones

Absolutely wonderful book! Miss Seeton travels and turns up the heat without knowing it. Mel is there alone the way to try and help keep Miss Seetons world safe.

The Miss Seeton series is an extended satire of Miss Marple-ish mystery stories. And it does it so well! I laughed out loud through this whole series.

enjoyed the complete set.enjoyed the complete set.
The past 2-3 books in the series have been a little lacklustre. However, this book brings a much stronger story, interesting characters and a wee bit of Scot / English history into the mix. Thoroughly enjoyed this book.
