Ernest Ralph Tidyman (January 1, 1928 – July 14, 1984) was an American author and screenwriter, best known for his novels featuring the African-American detective John Shaft. He also co-wrote the screenplay for the film version of Shaft with John . His screenplay for The French Connection garnered him an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as a Golden Globe Award, a Writers Guild of America Award, and an Edgar Award.

Shaft Among the Jews-in my opinion, the best entry in this series-is the follow-up to Tidyman’s Shaft (1970) . Despite Roundtree’s presence in the role, Tidyman continued to write the Shaft character true to his original outline.

What initially inspired you too write this book? I had just re-read Raymond Benson’s James Bond Bedside Companion covering the Bond books and movies – one of many written about the character The World of Shaft.

Herzl has had an alchemical vision which can be translated into new gems - diamonds, emeralds and rubies. Tidyman certainly does (he scripted The French Connection) so that this streaks, and the ethnic touches are pretty damned funny.
