A Novel by Ernest Tidyman John Shaft is back, Smooth, black, and deadly, the private eye whose initial recorded exploits (Shaft) established him as out first genuine superhero since James Bond.

Ernest Ralph Tidyman (January 1, 1928 – July 14, 1984) was an American author and screenwriter, best known for his novels featuring the African-American detective John Shaft. He also co-wrote the screenplay for the film version of Shaft with John . Shaft Among the Jews-in my opinion, the best entry in this series-is the follow-up to Tidyman’s Shaft (1970) . Despite Roundtree’s presence in the role, Tidyman continued to write the Shaft character true to his original outline.

Shaft Among the Jews-in my opinion, the best entry in this series-is the follow-up to Tidyman’s Shaft (1970), and was published in hardback in June 1972. That was one year after the release of the phenomenally successful movie starring Richard Roundtree and just ahead of the sequel, Shaft’s Big Score!. Shaft Among the Jews sees Shaft facing off against a team of crooked diamond merchants, who are using an old Jewish diamond cutter’s secret formula to create synthetic diamonds. By (author) Ernest Tidyman.

What initially inspired you too write this book? I had just re-read Raymond Benson’s James Bond Bedside Companion covering the Bond books and movies – one of many written about the character The World of Shaft.

The second book appearance of that shiny black stud, Shaft, now prowling among some Hassidim - the ""Jesuits of. .That is if you know how to apply enough pressure and heat.

The second book appearance of that shiny black stud, Shaft, now prowling among some Hassidim - the ""Jesuits of the international gem business"" after one Avrim Herzel has disappeared. Herzl has had an alchemical vision which can be translated into new gems - diamonds, emeralds and rubies. Tidyman certainly does (he scripted The French Connection) so that this streaks, and the ethnic touches are pretty damned funny.

Too bad MGM didn't use this book (with Tidyman writing the screenplay) for the third Shaft movie instead of "Shaft in Africa". Good read, well paced, and the kind of action you would expect from John Shaft.

Shaft is hired by Hassidic Jews to investigate occurrences concerning diamonds. It turns out that these occurrences concern an Israeli defector who has a method of creating his own diamonds, a method that a corrupt, handsome, Jewish businessman is interested in. This jeweler, Morris Blackburn, is reminiscent of Ian Fleming's Goldfinger: Blackburn has the same fetish of diamonds, just as Goldfinger has the fetish of gold. In addition to Blackburn, an Israel agent who wants to get hold of the defector in order trade the secrets for weapons.

The "Shaft girls" are Amy Taylor-Davis, a blonde woman Shaft meets at a party given by his friend, Rollie Nickerson; and Cara Herzel, a young Israeli girl who is the daughter of the man who knows the prized method of creating diamonds, and who is used as bait by the Israeli agents to reel in her father.

Given the time these novels were written, there is some homophobic remarks (even from Shaft) and the usual racial epithets (even from Shaft). Still, a lot story is packed into this particular novel; and, despite the dated remarks and epithets...I liked this novel and felt it was one of the better ones of the series.
