Gabe Singleton and Andrew Stoddard were roommates at the Naval Academy in Annapolis years ago. Today, Gabe is a country doctor and his friend Andrew has gone from war hero to governor to President of the United States. One day, while the United States is embroiled in a bitter presidential election campaign, Marine One lands on Gabe’s Wyoming ranch, and President Stoddard delivers a disturbing revelation and a startling request. His personal physician has suddenly and mysteriously disappeared, and he desperately needs Gabe to take the man’s place. Despite serious misgivings, Gabe agrees to come to Washington. It is not until he is ensconced in the White House medical office that Gabe realizes there is strong evidence that the President is going insane. Facing a crisis of conscience - as President Stoddard’s physician, he has the power to invoke the Twenty-fifth Amendment to transfer presidential power to the Vice President - Gabe uncovers increasing evidence that his friend’s condition may not be due to natural causes. Who? Why? And how? The President’s life is at stake. A small-town doctor suddenly finds himself in the most powerful position on earth, and the safety of the world is in jeopardy. Gabe Singleton must find the answers, and the clock is ticking....

Well plotted read. Very interesting, fast paced read. Thorough knowledge of White House protocol & nano particles scientific studies. Of course not having checked the facts quoted in the novel, it does all seem feasible, but then again, it's a fiction novel. Very well produced.

A friend recommended this book to me. It was published several years ago, so it took a little longer to arrive - no 2 day shipping on this one. I was surprised that I really enjoyed reading it. A different setting and a complicated plot and some unique characters. If you haven't read this one and you like complicated plots and multiple story lines you should give it a go.

This book was recommended by a friend. It is intriguing. It is suspenseful. There were moments I wanted to put it down because I couldn't stand not knowing the outcome. There were moments I couldn't put it down for fear of never knowing the outcome. There were many moments I carried the characters and story with me into my dreams and throughout my day-worried about their well-being. I highly recommend this book.

Lately, I've been reading a lot of thrillers that seem to be carbon copies. There's always a male lead with a female sidekick who's just as capable as he is with the fisticuffs. There's always a chase scene or two, and the bad guys are about as interesting as what passes for television these days. Although it has a refreshing set-up, I didn't have high hope for THE FIRST PATIENT. I was wrong.

Dr. Gabe Singleton has been called to Washington to be the personal physician to President Andrew Stoddard, an old Annapolis roommate. What he doesn't know is that the president may be going insane and that the previous presidential physician has disappeared.

The second hook involves nanotechnology, a science that uses atoms as building blocks to do such things as target cancers. Palmer adroitly works this new science into the plot, and there's a character, Lily Sexton, who's up for the new science and technology cabinet position which will try to regulate a science that may be overflowing its bounds.

Of course, there's also a love story. A nurse, Alison Cromartie, who's really an undercover secret service agent assigned to Singleton's office to find out if the rumors about the president's mental instability are true. Gabe and Alison immediately fall for each other, although he knows she hasn't been completely honest with him and the president's blood work is missing.

Michael Palmer provides all kinds of suspects including the vice president who makes no bones about the fact that he wants Stoddard's job. He even goes so far as to explain the 25th Amendment to Gabe. As Singleton tries to figure out what's going on with the president, Allison pursues a creepy secret service agent who has a secret life.

The author is associate director of the Massachusetts Medical Society Physician Health Services that works with physicians who have wellness issues, so he really has the inside track. This is a real page-turner, right up until the end when Palmer plays a little fast and loose with the ending. For instance, would invite someone to your ranch who had tried to kill you, no matter what his motivation was?

The idea of a Wyoming rancher/doctor being asked to become the personal doctor of his friend who happens to be the President of the United States was a great hook. Was the President going mad? Was he being drugged? A few attempted murders...a little bit of torture, and some strong sleuthing and a lot of who-to-trusts. Throw in a little prospective romance and you have The First Patient. As improbable as this whole scenario goes, this political-medical thriller had its interesting parts. Not particular crazy about the ending but it was a decent read.

After reading this novel, I am deeply saddened that the literary world lost Michael Palmer. His son, Daniel Palmer is a most excellent writer also. The First Patient was an extremely exciting novel. I didn't want it to end.
