Christopher G. Moore’s prize-winning series of crime novels set in Bangkok has been translated into eleven languages and critically acclaimed around the world. Featuring Vincent Calvino, a disbarred American lawyer working as a PI in the dangerous and steamy Thai capital, the books offer gripping plots, fascinating characters, and unparalleled insight into one of the world’s most entrancing cities. In Paying Back Jack, Calvino agrees to follow the “minor wife” of a Thai politician and report on her movements. His client is Rick Casey, a shady American whose life has been darkened by the unsolved murder of his idealistic son. But what seems to be a simple surveillance job pulls Calvino into a quest for revenge, as well as a perilous web of political allegiance. Calvino narrowly escapes an attempt on his life and then avoids being framed for a murder only through the calculated lever-pulling of his best friend, Thai police colonel, Pratt. But unknown to our man in Bangkok, in an anonymous apartment tower in the center of the city, a two-man sniper team awaits its shot, a shot that will change everything. Paying Back Jack is classic Christopher G. Moore: densely-woven, eye-opening, and riveting.

This book is terrific. It's more exciting than any Tom Clancy novel I've ever read. Without a doubt one of the best Vincent Calvino novels I've read. Every small detail you encounter re-apears later with greater development later in the book. I don't know how he comes up with so much detail, time after time. It's really fast paced, and once you get started, it's hard to put down. Your excited to get to the end to find out whats happening, and at the same time, you wish it would go on forever. Everything is intertwined with every thing else. If you've ever spent time in Southeast Asia, you'll enjoy this detective story set in and around Bangkok. The locations are real, even though the novel is fiction. Business names and people are fiction, but it's fun when you know he's there in locations you have experienced as well. Very suspenseful.

The Vincent Calvino series is a rock solid detective series. I have enjoyed this series for a few years. For a while it was "bootleg" in the US. It was as hard to get and had the same mystique as a can of cold Coors before it went national. Calvino is a disbarred New York attorney with a quick head and quick hands to match. He was framed for something he didn't do in Gotham City ; he has a good heart which is warmed by the heat he packs under his loose fitting unlined Brioni knock-off sports jacket on the steaming hot streets. His haunts are the sois
(streets) of Bangkock. He pursues his capers with a unique combination of Western sensibility but with an understanding of Eastern sensitivity. He is savvy and tough and no babe in the woods. The action explodes off the page as Calvino is the only obstacle between his client the Thai General and a street hit, Bangkock style. I have read other authors and Bangkock procedurals, but, after returning to PAYING BACK JACK C.G.Moore must be crowned the king of this genre. His writing is taut, descriptive and explosive. His protagonist is likeable, believable, fallible and capable. Moores' knowledge of Bangkock as filtered through a knowing occidental's eyes is unbeatable. In short; a winning combination of entertainment.

Once again Khun Vinny Lewisville thru such a mystery that even he has a hard time trying to know what's up and down . He is in the end the paragon of the ugly American who has seen the truth and flowed his heart .....ended the ones responsible for their sins .... Go vinny .....

This is the latest book in the series I have read (in order), and I thought the last one (The Risk of Infidelity Index) was the best, but I was mistaken. This one is the best so far !!

I did enjoy this book from Christopher Moore; for some reason I missed it chronologically when I read the other Vincent Calvino books and have finally read it.
Its a good story but I have to say that some of the machinations seemed a bit 'contrived' and the hypothesis was a bit heavy in places. Never the less recommended!!

Good page turner for your trip back to SE Asia.

I love Vinnie Calvino mysteries. I found this one a bit complicated and harder to follow.
Christoper G. Moore knows Bangkok probably better than most Thai's. And he probably embarrasses the hell out of them. Another great Vincent Calvino novel.
