Following an introduction that, among other things, points to the difficulties of long-distance cross-country travel in the days when there were no alternatives, there are twelve main chapters covering the pioneering years, the old pre-1923 companies, the railway towns, the big four companies that operated the trains from 1923-48, the railway in the city, parcels and wagon loads, the passenger train, special locomotives, state occasions, the steam railway at war, the last years of steam and (finally) little trains. These chapters are followed by a glossary, bibliography, time line and index.

Some pictures are in full colour while others are in black and white. While many of the pictures are of locomotives, there are plenty of other pictures too. Several maps are also included, showing the network in various parts of Britain as it once was. Interspersed through the book are small articles on railway companies and some of the important men who helped shape the railways.

Although I found all of it interesting, I particularly liked the chapter on railway towns. It is well known that while some established towns became even more important as railway companies established their works there (Derby being one such example), it was more common for railway companies to build their works where there was no previous settlement of any size, Swindon and Crewe being famous examples. In these towns, which grew around the railway industry, local politics came under railway control, with senior managers winning elections to local councils or the Westminster parliament. The chapter also mentions important railway junctions, which the public considered to be railway towns because they so often had to change there. Also included are some small locations that wouldn't have existed but for the railway, such as Riccarton in Scotland, near the English border.

The chapter on the last days of steam explains why Britain was at first reluctant to replace steam as its primary power on the railways, except in the south where there had been extensive electrification. It goes on to explain why that steam policy had to change, whereupon things happened fast. The final chapter on little lines provides the link to the present, as it takes a brief look at the preservation of narrow gauge, miniature and standard gauge branch lines.

This book presents a wonderful overview of the heyday of Britain's railways. While no book can cover such a broad subject in depth, this is as good as any book of its type that I've seen.
