I would use this book to sing in the classroom, to any age children This is a great collection of American folk songs for children. She has a small intro for each song and the music is actually playable.

I would use this book to sing in the classroom, to any age children. I think American folk songs are important to learn and not let be forgotten. Feb 21, 2019 Emily rated it really liked it. Shelves: music, nonfiction, history. A nice collection of American folk songs for children. The kids and I enjoy the short snippets of background information about each song. This is a great collection of American folk songs for children. She even included some more modern folk like The Motorcycle Song. I would have liked to see Blowin In The Wind but oh well.

I bought this book to play and sing with my 18 month old son. So far he loves the funny, beautiful, colorful illustrations too . This book contains many of the traditional songs for grade school age children. Great reference tool for guitar playing grandparents. So far he loves the funny, beautiful, colorful illustrations too much to let me stay on one page long enough to play it through. This is a wonderful collection, with nearly every classic folk song I remember from my own childhood, many I have heard of but didn't actually know, and many new songs. Creates a good bonding sing along with kids.

Originally published as Gonna Sing My Head Off!, this big, colorful songbook is now reissued for the first time with a 23-song CD created especially for it. It's not just for children- our whole family loves the CD! Unlike most kids' collections, this one doesn't have candied-down sugary kids' versions of the songs- it's real folk singers. The book itself has all the words, sheet music, and brief historical blurbs on all the songs, which are very interesting to read as well. We have several other collections of children's folk music, but this is by far the best. Every household- with and without kids- should own this book.

American Folk Songs for Children. I would recommend this book to any children's music director or teacher. A complete work of folk tunes and fun songs to learn and memorize, so they will not be forgotten. Recently Viewed and Featured. Select Format: Hardcover. Daisy Dryden : A Memoir (1909).

Kathleen Krull, Allen Garns, Arlo Guthrie. The book includes 62 of the best-loved American folk songs, with all the lyrics and easy-to-play musical arrangements of the tunes everyone remembers although they may need a little help with the words

"Work songs, love songs, ballads and blues, lullabyies, spirituals, protest songs, and sheer nonsense make up this entertaining collection of 62 traditional and contemporary favorites. The exuberant illustrations manage to be both familiar and dramatic and range in tone from comic exaggeration to understatement and unashamed sentiment. Informal notes at the head of each song give something about history, origin, performance, and possibilities for variation. The notes also express the sense of connection with ordinary people's lives that is at the heart of this collection."--Booklist

I stumbled on this treasure in a library book sale several years ago, but only opened it up to use in my homeschool this year as we go through 2 years of studying American History. I love how the songs bring us through so many key periods of American history. The songs in this book aren't simply great to listen to and sing, they provide great teaching opportunities as we discuss the stories and artists behind the songs as well as the events and issues that some of them were written about. To solve the problem of no CD with this book, I have been looking up each of the songs on YouTube. I've had no trouble finding each of the songs being performed...in fact, many times it's been difficult to narrow it down to just one performer! I ended up creating a Pinterest board to save my favorite ones, and have tried to choose a wide variety of musical styles and artists as well as time periods when they lived and performed. Where possible, I've looked for recordings of the songwriter singing their own song. As a result of taking this extra step, my child is not only getting exposed to great music, but is becoming familiar with many great musicians of the past and present! I highly recommend this book to go along with any study of American history, whether in a homeschool or traditional classroom. It is a true gem!

This book is a treasure! I discovered it while substitute teaching the music class at the local elementary school, and was impressed with the content, ease of playing and the complete texts of songs long forgotten that I had enjoyed so much as a child. This is a must have for home or school teaching. It has many wonderful lessons for teaching music and American folk themes. Even though it is aimed at children, I heartily recommend it to everyone. There should be one sitting on every piano!

The exposure to folk songs was highly anticipated -- however, unless you can read music well or are familiar with all the songs -- it leaves a bit to be desired as you are unsure how the song is supposed to sound. I think a CD would have worked better for our purposes.

Every song in this book, even those that I don't think are going to be of interest, is a winner with my elementary students. I love the background on each song and the art in the book. Every elementary class should have this book.
