His first book, Land and the National Question in Ireland, 1858–82 was a revisionist study that challenged nationalist historiography by examining the clash between landowners and tenants as well as the conflict between large and small tenants. His third book, a short study of Charles Stewart Parnell, challenged some of the arguments of the award-winning biography of Parnell by F. S. L. Lyons, though Lyons, one of the "doyens" of modern Irish history, acknowledged the young historian's arguments by stating that "Nothing Dr Bew writes is without interest.

219) Bew's book revolves around two theses. The first is that the land agitation, far from being dominated by the violent and illegal actions of a united peasantry, was in fact a 'class struggle' in which 'highly legalistic strategies' were employed. These strategies were altered several times in response to 'the class struggle within the Land League alliance' (I 90), most significantly to accommodate the prosperous farmers as they. By acknowledging that 'class warfare' was a vital aspect of the land and national agitation Bew has provided a thesis which will stimulate some much needed controversy on social organization and class structure in Ireland.
