Originally, The Civil Wars was conceived as a single daylong piece of music theatre to accompany the 1984 Summer Olympics.

Was gobsmacked by the music and performance. It is being reissued on Nonsuch Oct 30, 2007. Also saw the Catherine Wheel, another joyous performance. In the Knee Plays there was lots of improvised music. I spoke with a couple of the band members who were some fine talented musicians from Brooklyn. See it if the play is revived and it comes to your town.

I learned these works by singing in the bass section, and it was a good form of instructio. look back at Satyagraha now, and think that I was remarkably lucky! I was very lucky! I didn’t deserve to have written so well for the voice as I did then. The Rome Section of the CIVIL warS opens as Act V of a sweeping drama should, with turbulent and dramatic music that seems to sum up the story so far, punctuated by a fearsome trumpet-call motive.
