It may have been published in 1980, but it has a late 60s kitchen sink vibe to it. No school like Old School, and no ones does it better than Charlotte Lamb. I love her writing with its atmosphere, drama, and angst.

It may have been published in 1980, but it has a late 60s kitchen sink vibe to it. Here we have a young girl lead astray by a self-centered and selfish H. She jumps from the usual grotty flat stasis that inflicts modern day HP heroines and goes straight for amnesia. From there she sharpens her claws to rip and tear the H down to his clay feet.

Mass Market Paperback, Harlequin Presents 187 pages. Published September 1981 by Harlequin Books (first published 1980). This is the third Harlequin I have read by her and it is so different than the previous two I have read. If nothing else, I commend her for being diverse in a genre that dictates using the same paint by number formula.

A good romance

Let me start off by stating that I am not a huge fan of this author. I usually do not like her H and her h tend to be a little too doormat-ish for me. Knowing that I still read the book based on a recommendation and I was floored by how good it was. This is a rare gem amongst some of the old harlequin train wreck that are out there. At first I thought, here we go again, weak female character. However, as the story progressed the readers see the h develop a sense of worth and she begins to stand up for herself. Even more rare, the H actually grovels, yes, grovels in the story for all he did. It was awesome, loved it! By the end of the book you really believed in the H and the h HEA.

I had this book before and unfortunately it was misplaced when I moved. I LOVE THIS BOOK! ! It pulls at your heartstrings... I admit that most women would probably not be so forgiving but it's the kind of romance you wish for but get scared when you find it.

It may have been published in 1980, but it has a late 60s kitchen sink vibe to it.

No school like Old School, and no ones does it better than Charlotte Lamb. I love her writing with its atmosphere, drama, and angst. Just beautiful.

Here we have a young girl lead astray by a self-centered and selfish H. She jumps from the usual grotty flat stasis that inflicts modern day HP heroines and goes straight for amnesia. From there she sharpens her claws to rip and tear the H down to his clay feet. It’s not pretty, but she says all the vicious things any woman who has been dumped wants to say but is too afraid to come across as ugly and bitter. She is bitter, and she is not afraid.

Stealing a quote from the book she tells him, 'Just go. You're boring me.' Ouch! Has any heroine said anything more devastating to a hero in an HP?

Soooo, HEA or murder-suicide?

From the back cover:
One awful moment shattered her life

Basslea was a haven, and Marina was totally content there. She had her music and her innocent childlike fantasies. Nothing seemed capable of changing her world - until Gideon Firth arrived.

He was everything she was not: sophisticated, urbane, powerful. And she found herself responding to his magnetism the way no unawakened girl should.....

He seemed to wield a power she didn't understand, until he forced her to recognize the truth for herself. Then Marina realized what was happening to her - and what had happened!

My take:
I loved the description of Marina and her relationship to her haven. Very atmospheric! Lamb sets the stage for the drama of the story very effectively. I've read it twice already since ordering it weeks ago. So far, both times the poignancy and bittersweet emotions come through powerfully.

A very good read!
