Rather than thinking that history-social science is the information in "the book," students need to analyze and evaluate real data, at their level, just as a historian or social scientist would. They need to experience a time and place through photos, literature, and artifacts. Though content appropriate, the resources for very young students should be utilized with an older student or adult nearby to help with reading and navigation.
I believe that in California high school social studies teachers should be allowed to teach what they want. At the end of every year, I’d like to see the state provide students enrolled in the World History and US History classes with a chance to take some kind of multiple choice/free response test (modeled after the old Golden State Exams of the 1980’s and 1990’s but with that test to be scored by the teachers, rather than. the state, and only required if the teacher so wishes.
