When the early Latter-day Saints first settled in the Salt Lake Valley, other settlers of different Christian faiths were not far behind them. As non-Mormon pioneers mingled in the community, many were shocked to observe the practice of polygamy among the Mormons. Paddock had to have been one of the first Utah writers to speak out this boldly and bravely about the Mountain Meadows Massacre of 1857, insisting that the Deseret News story that laid all the blame on local Indians was a cover-up, and pinpointing Brigham Young as the perpetrator.
