This book provides the first unified, up-to-date, and tutorial-level overview of sequence analysis methods, with particular emphasis on probabilistic modelling. In the past two years, our original grand plans have been distilled into what we hope is a practical book. 9 x Preface This is a subjective book written by opinionated authors. It is not a tutorial on practical sequence analysis.
Concerted efforts in genome sequencing and gene discovery have resulted in large amounts of DNA sequence data and the development of databases containing enormous numbers of records. However, the majority of this sequence data functionally belong to so-called hypothetical genes or gene fragments that code for proteins of unknown functions, and DNA sequences and motifs with unknown regulatory capabilities.
