Our son initially chose this book out of the library at random, and I enjoyed reading this book to him so much, I decided to buy it to add to his home reading library. It's fun and happy, and captures the spirit of childlike love of snow and winter. The main character, Robby's, friendship with the family dog, Zippy, is endearing, too.

Okay, call me a nutrition prude, but Robby has a bit too much freedom in the kitchen when he makes his own breakfast... bread with powdered sugar, and makes a mess to boot. I'm all for the excitement of a snow day, but it doesn't give my children license to be irresponsible in the kitchen. (Later they have cocoa with colored marshmallows.) For a Mom who tries to reduce the sugar consumption in our household without trying to make my five kids feel like they're deprived all the time, I'm bummed that this book promotes unhealthy sweets that tantalize tastebuds and will likely bring about the question... Can we try that sometime, Mom? I love that the family joins in together for snowball fighting and building a fire together, but the sugary sweetness of this story ruined it for me. Wish I could edit out that part of the book because otherwise, it would have been a four star. Why do chidren's books so often have to include sweets and treats? I suppose the story would be less appealing if they all came inside for a hot herbal tea. But in case some other parent wanted to know... I purchased this based on a homeschool family's recommendation of it being a favorite and they are healthy eaters, so apparently it didn't bother them.

Robby is a typical school-aged kid who sees huge drifts of snow outside his window on a winter morning. His big hope is confirmed - Snow Day! The rest of the book details what he and his eternally happy dog, Zippy, do on a snow day. His two sisters and his mom and dad also join in the snow fun for parts of it. Sometimes Robby likes to be different like when he makes a "snow monster," instead of the snow angels his sister makes. The day ends with the family snuggling blankets around the fire, drinking hot cocoa. The illustrations are simple and pleasing with lots of color. A great book for the winter season.

It's a good story for kindergarten or first grade. Explains what a snow day is for home schooled children, and a long story appropriate for older young children who have had that experience. Too long for preschool. Good illustrations.
