The Glass Palace" is a Fawcett Coventry Romance book. A Victorian romance story, the heroine is "born on the wrong side of the blanket," a "Cinderella" type heroine is used as a "door mat" by the family. Her first fiance keeps her waiting 5 years. However, the hero of this romance sees her value & they have Happy Every After. Not Mary Ann Gibbs' best book though good if you like a "Cinderella" story. Jun 17, 2016 MrsER rated it it was amazing. Beautifully crafted, inspiring story, no sex, no profanity, no vulgarity. The author had an exact grasp at the era about which she was reading.

Historical, Victorian romance. At 17, Sally Lofthouse was just past the schoolgirl stage, deeply infatuated with her neighbor, Edward Martin, and busily attending parties. But her friend, Emma, led a totally different life, her destiny controlled by an all-powerful and distant guardian no one had ever seen.

Rose Mary Walls (Mom). Center of the Universe. Mom treads the fine line between optimism and delusion. This could be a positive thing, we suppose, but the fact is that Mom spends more time on the delusion side of the fence. She always looks on the bright side of life, but by doing so, she turns life into an absurd Monty Python skit. One notable instance of this is when she leaves a piano outside and says, "Most pianists never get the chance to play in the great out-of-doors" (. 2. That's optimistic and more or less harmless

I got a chuckle out of the other review. She's right about the basic plot but if you like me are a died in the wool Mary Ann Gibbs fan, enduring through some of the early pages is worth it in the end.
Yes her original fiance kept her strung along for 5 years = ghastly. He was unpleasant as well. But finally the hero sees her worth.

Don't listen to the other reviewers: this is an excellent book. (I actually suspect they did not read the whole book...) Beautifully crafted, inspiring story, no sex, no profanity, no vulgarity. The author had an exact grasp at the era about which she was writing. If you like Jane Austen you will love this book.

Victorian era Coventry Romance. Couldn't finish this one. The storyline was promising, the heroine was born "on the wrong side of the sheets". But the writing fell into the classic "Cinderella" complex-she was raised by her uncles's family and EVERYONE treats her like a doormat-from her family, to her fiancé who'd been stringing her along for FIVE years:( I quit about 80 pages in-just too much of a downer
