Written by Bill Hannan a real gentleman. Bill Hannan was the Captain of H. M. TUG INDUSTRIOUS at DEVONPORT in 1957 when I had the honour of being a Junior Crew member at that time. Unlike most Tug captains he was a true Gent and always prepared to help with my Navigation and Maritime studies at Plymouth School of Navigation. Thanks to him for this very meaningful book.

This book provides an excellent overview of the tugs used by the Royal Navy during the twentieth century. It provides an good introduction to the subject for historians wishing to research the subject.

British Naval Tugs were never afforded any sort of biography or history as was usually given to fighting ships. Quite often placed in some seemingly unimportant role, these vessels provided sterling service whenever and wherever large ships required help in coming in to harbour.

Some were purpose built for the Royal Navy to meet the demands of specific ship types. Other were either purchased or hired (all over the world) and all met their disposal without ceremony when the time came.

My own interest in the subject stems from a few of these vessels which were lost at sea and have become notable wrecks enjoyed by divers in various locations. Modern scuba divers like to know more and more about the wreck they are visiting and are frequently disappointed by either a complete lack of information or the publication of erroneous details.

With precious little information available in the first place, it is books from people like the late Bill Hannan (who really knew his subject) which serve to assist those of us who continue the tradition of research. This particular book has proved to be a most valuable asset in that regard
