In 1965 John Berger dedicated his book on Picasso to Max Raphael, whom he called "a forgotten but great critic. This characterization was true during Raphael's later years, when he died in 1952, as well as in the decade after his death. In the last ten years, however, Raphael's criticism has received increasing attention. His critique of Picasso's work, for example, has become more timely than ever in light of the extravagant Picasso retrospective in 1980 at the Museum of Modern Art.
