Penny Wolin has done it again. First, it was "Fringe of the Diaspora, the Jews of Wyoming." Now, she gives us "Descendants of Light: American Photographers of Jewish Ancestry." This book is a work of art unto itself that provides us a gentle journey behind the lens and captures the essence of each gifted photographer featured. In this age of instantaneous digital photography and over-abundance of 'selfies,' Descendants is a breath of fresh air. The reader is given a peek behind the shutter of these talented artists who have indelibly made their mark in 20th century American photography. This is a book for the ages, and one to be appreciated not only by amateur and professional photographers alike, but more importantly, those of us laypeople who enjoy the lasting gifts of the images they create.

This is a must-read for anyone who enjoys photography, anyone who is interested in the shared and sometimes denied Jewish experience, or who is interested in the sociological evolution of 20th century artistic expression and observation.

It's beautifully written, and masterfully printed and bound. This is a gift I have given myself, and is a delight to the senses for anyone who glances through it on a coffee table, or settles down for an in-depth read. It is enjoyable on many different levels. If you're looking for a memorable gift, or an addition to your personal library, this is one purchase you will treasure.

Must have book to understand the scope of being "Jewish" in America. Beautiful photographs, and riviting text to make a complete journey.

This is an incredible work. Wolin has documented the entire gamut of American Jewish history and culture in, of all places, Wyoming! I was attracted to the gorgeously reproduced photography and then found the text to be very interesting. There are quotes from the subjects, historical references, very smart captions, and photographs that do not seem to be leaving my memory. This book is a bargain ... and a must for any library of history and photography.

I LOVED this book. If you're Jewish or know someone who's Jewish, the text and the photos of this magnificent and generous book will thrill you. No, not thrill you. Warm you deeply. What a glorious and life-affirming creation. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
