My appreciation of The Captain’s Daughter has moved through several stages. At first, as I have said, I saw the novel as rather casually structured-a patchwork quilt, a collage of fictional letters, historical detail, and poems in a variety of styles. Some of Pushkin’s effects of alliteration extend only the length of a single sentence. These leave a translator with little room to maneuver. 1, 187–89. Chapter 1, A sergeant of the guards. During the reign of Catherine the Great, the young Grinev sets out for his new career in the army and en route performs an act of kindness by giving his warm coat to a man freezing in a blizzard.

If I’m correct, with The Captain’s Daughter, Pushkin wrote the first great novel of Russian literature. After his poetry work, he decided it was time to try prose and was inspired to do so after reading Sir Walter Scott. I read a French version translated in 1973 by Brice Parrain. Turgenev helped him translate Pushkin and Gogol into French. So it’s supposed to be faithful to the.

My father, Andrey Petrovitch Grineff, who served in his youth under Count Münich, had retired with the rank of senior major, in the year 17-. The novel - Captain's Daughter by Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin is known by all Russian pupils from the school course. But it is read and loved by all ages. It was first published in the literary journal Sovremennik in 1836. The novel about Pugachev's Rebellion is full of the similarities, that drew the main characters of the novel through Russian rebellion – senseless and pitiless as Pushkin say. This historical novel by Pushkin is extremely informative as well as being very entertaining. There are black and white illustrations to amplify the story of the Pugachev Revolution in 1700's Russia.
There is romance to move the story forward and the characters are well drawn.
I enjoyed this novel very much.

Looks like they Scanned

Ioughed the kindle version. Looks like they scanned the pages from the book. This kindle version is unacceptable. I don't even want to read it now since I have to try to enlarge every page in order to be able to see it so I can read. If I knew before how the kindle pages look, I wouldn't have bought it. I am very disappointed.

I have read so much of Pushkin's writing that I was delighted to find this little treasure of short stories. They are all engrossing, particularly the title story. Loved it so much I sent my daughter a copy and she loved reading it as well. Highly recommended to anyone and a NOT TO BE MISSED work for any Pushkin fan. As usual, one wishes one could read it in Russian and avoid the translation idiosyncracies, but that is life.

Being the first read book I read of Pushkin's, I was left thoroughly impressed. It is quite short (<200 pages), but has a very enticing plot and vivid imagery. Several illustrations included in the book also help bring it to life. What makes it great is an ideal balance of romance, tragedy, and drama. If you are interested in Russian history, it is also a must have.
