Whereas the first books of the poem often relate his youthful fears and indiscretions, he included in the final books of the poem more mature information about the political situation in France and England, changing and extending the arc of the autobiography to cover the world around him. He had a firm sense of time and place but did not follow them in a regular fashion.
Wordsworth's masterpiece is generally considered to be The Prelude, an autobiographical poem of his early years which the poet revised and expanded a number of times. The work was posthumously titled and published, William Wordsworth was a major English romantic poet who, with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, helped launch the Romantic Age in English literature with their 1798 joint publication, Lyrical Ballads.
