Whether tracing the origins of your own faith or attempting to satisfy a curiosity about religious practices an ocean away,The Illustrated Guide to World Religionswill be a fascinating and indispensable guide to the complexity of the world's living religions.

Graced with rich illustrations and written by a team of eminent scholars, The Illustrated Guide to World Religions presents a wealth of information on faiths around the world. Each chapter in this volume examines one of seven major world religions--from Judaism to Christianity and from Islam to Buddhism--and contains information about its holidays and festivities, key historical and mythological figures, architectural styles, calendars, language, and important texts. Generously peppered throughout the book are small, succinct sidebars on such issues as the afterlife, the role of women, the importance of saints, and the quest for higher wisdom. We discover, for instance, that Pure Land Buddhism--found mainly in China, Japan, and Tibet--holds that meditation on a particular deity at the moment of death will help insure rebirth into that deity's celestial domain. In Judaism, on the other hand, the concept of an afterlife has never played a central role. Uniquely organized in a manner that encourages comparative analysis, the book's lavish full-color art, maps, and photographs all focus on faith in practice, in both elaborate ritual and everyday life. Religion continues to be a monumental force in a rapidly changing world. Whether tracing the origins of your own faith or attempting to satisfy a curiosity about religious practices an ocean away, The Illustrated Guide to World Religions will be a fascinating and indispensable guide to the complexity of the world's living religions.

Had to purchase the book for a Comparative Religion college class. I really like the way it's set up, easy to read, and have learned a lot from this book. Great option for school or if you're interested in learning about other religions.

Meh. Not my favorite book on religion. It looks so comprehensive, but I feel like it covers too much because nothing is really covered in depth. You get a little bit about a million things. Which maybe is kind of cool. But it wasn't my favorite way of learning about these topics. However, it does have wonderful photos and illustrations. It's not a bad or poorly written book at all, it just didn't work for me.

This was a great textbook I used for years. Although basically a coffee table book, at least in the large-format hardback version, it is full of beautiful pictures but also has an excellent text on each faith tradition written by an expert in the field. The text is not too much for undergrads. But alas, it is completely out of print and has no electronic version.

This book was suggested to me by a wonderful Humanities professor at AMU. If is great for an all around idea of the basics of the world religions. I am happy to have it and refer to it often. Simple to read. Clear and concise.

its ok for a shortsighted and brief overview. I would say you should read actually religious texts and descriptions by masters in the respective religions you want to learn about instead of this though.

I purchased this book for a World Religions college course. It has good information and great pictures in color. Not a very long book, but it was an introductory course.

What a book...this book is full of wonderful things. It is just the right amount, not to short and certainly not too long. It sums things up well and gets to the point ! I learned a lot from this book.
This book is very easy to read and use. I'm glad that the professor made this a required book for class.
