In this book, Schurmann does an excellent job of explaining Chinese Communist ideology, as well as elucidating just how China was organized. Unfortunately, Schurmann's work is no longer a piece of analytical reporting, but a piece of history (since the work is over 30 years old).

Schurmann taught at the University of California, Berkeley, in the departments of Sociology and History for 38 years. He also served a term as the head of the Center for Chinese Studies.
