Harley Granville-Barker was a contemporary of George Bernard Shaw and his compatriot . It should be noted that this volume contains the early, original versions of Granville-Barker plays, which he rewrote 20 years or more later.

Harley Granville-Barker was a contemporary of George Bernard Shaw and his compatriot, though considerably younger than Shaw. Their writing styles are remarkably similar, but Granville-Barker wrote material that, in his day, was highly controversial if not scandalous. It's wonderful stuff. These plays aren't produced nearly enough.

Harley Granville-Barker (25 November 1877 – 31 August 1946) was an English actor, director, producer, critic and playwright. Born in London, Harley Granville Barker (the hyphen came later) made his f. .rst debut and appearance onstage there at the age of 14. His acting work led to increasing discontent with the low standards of the commercial theatre. His first play, The Marrying of Ann Leete was produced by the Stage Society in 1900. After success with the Stage Society, Granville Barker turned his attentions to his own theatre company and with . Vedrenne took a lease on the Royal Court Theatre in London. There he managed three seasons of repertory theatre.

Harley Granville Barker, one of the most versatile figures in twentieth-century theatre, was the leader of the campaign to reform the English stage in the Edwardian period. His work as an actor, director, playwright, and manager set new standards of production and gave Shaw his first successful showings; his later career as a critic, after he abandoned the stage, opened new interpretations of Shakespeare and led the way to the establishment of a national theatre. This volume presents three of Granville Barker's best plays: The Marrying of Ann Leete (about a young woman rebelling against convention), The Voysey Inheritance (digging at middle-class hypocrisy), and Waste (banned by the Lord Chamberlain, the tragedy of a politician caught in a sexual trap). Written between 1899 and 1907, and collected here for the first time in a scholarly edition, they reveal Barker as an exciting, subtle and innovative dramatist.
