The previous reviewer complained about the price but didn't say much about the merits of the book.

In fact, I think this is a VERY good layman's survey of Mesopotamian culture -- with maps, a Sumerian glossary (!), and citations for everything 'citable'. I would never expect one person to write a book like this based on his or her "original" research -- come on, archaeologists & scholars of antiquities have more than enough to do just pursuing their work and publishing the occasional scholarly article or monograph! It's ridiculous to fault an author for referring to others' "original" work, especially when the sources are faithfully cited. I think there is always a need for a sophisticated "lay" expert to digest and summarize the work of others.

Can anyone remember when the law was passed allowing textbook publishers legally to rape consumers? Anyone??

Seventy-five dollars, folks! Seventy-five dollars for a serviceable text consisting entirely of summarization from other works of both primary and secondary research, of citations from on-line encyclopedias (!?), and of graphics mainly drawn from the "Land of the Bible Picture Archive" and from an 1894 "History of the World".

Again, that's "seventy-five dollars".

Caveat, it should go without saying, emptor. Go to your local library and borrow a copy.
