Part of Little Women series by Louisa May Alcott. Several film adaptations of Little Women have appeared over the years, with appeals to successive generations of readers. Particularly following feminist critiques of Alcott’s domestic novel, readers have been more vocal about finding it sentimental, even sometimes cloyingly sweet, by more modern standards.

Mr. N. wants a girls’ story, and I begin ‘Little Women

Mr. wants a girls’ story, and I begin ‘Little Women. Marmee (mother), Anna and May approve my plan, so I plod away, though I don’t enjoy this sort of thing. Never liked girls or knew many, excepting sisters; our queer ways and experiences may prove interesting, though I doubt it. -from her diary, in Louisa May Alcott: Her Life, Letters, and Journals (1889). Miss Alcott’s new juvenile is an agreeable little story, which is not only very well adapted to the readers for whom it is especially intended, but may also be read with pleasure by older people.

This popular series of readers has now been completely revised and updated, using a new syllabus and new word structure lists. Readability has been ensured by means of specially designed computer software. Words that are above level but essential to the story are explained within the text, illustrated, and then reused for maximum reinforcement.

This is a very quaint version of Little Women. I like it. For someone like me, who doesn't want to reread the whole original novel of Little Women, this is a good alternative for a recap. It plainly covers all of the significant events of the story with just enough detail. They should make this required reading in school for the little ones. I think children would find great pleasure in it.
