This was assigned reading in an elective Basic Catholicism course I recently took as a refresher on my faith. While I am inspired by the comments of other reviewers who indicate the book helped them on their journey of faith, I can't help but compare this book to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC). I found the writing style and organization of Teaching of Christ to be denser, and harder to follow than the CCC, and I was sympathetic to those in my class who didn't have a Catholic background, as they struggled a bit to follow along. While I don't read the CCC cover-to-cover, I do use it as a good reference source. I have taught classes at my parish on the sacraments of baptism and marriage and I found the CCC as a valuable resource in preparing for these classes. I can't imagine how I might have used Teaching of Christ in the same context.

I also have found the CCC to provide a clearer explanation of the Catholic position on a variety of contemporary issues that our society is currently grappling with. We can agree or disagree, but it helps to have a clear sense of Catholic teaching.

So, I have an obvious bias, as a practicing Catholic, but I would urge the potential reader to first consider CCC if you were only going to buy/read one Catholic Catechism. Hope this helps...

THE TEACHING OF CHRIST was the first Catholic book I ever read and it led me to become a Catholic. It has been a companion for many years. I bought my first copy while I was a Presbyterian in the 1980s. I recently bought the 5th edition. It is a wonderful exposition of the Catholic faith, covering everything from the nature of faith and the meaning of grace through the Trinity, the person and work of Jesus Christ, the role of Mary in our redemption and in the church, to the last rites and the fulfilment of all things.

The writing style is always warm and friendly while also being informative. There's always an appeal to the reader's life and loves though it is always subtle in making its appeal. I found it a great help in prayer, in spiritual formation, in understanding the gospel, and in learning what Jesus did for me. I recommend it to everybody.

Book was not 3rd Edition as they advertised. Mine is a 2nd Edition copy.
I purchased this book as a resource after hearing it mentioned on a christian tv program. I have not had time to review it, but I like how it is broken down into topics. Initially, it looks good.
