Modern English, especially written English, is full of bad habits which spread by imitation and which can be avoided if one is willing to take the necessary trouble. If one gets rid of these habits one can think more clearly, and to think clearly is a necessary first step toward political regeneration: so that the fight against bad English is not frivolous and is not the exclusive concern of professional writers. In our time it is broadly true that political writing is bad writing.

Britain’s spy agency, MI5, kept an active file on Orwell from 1929 until his death.

Eric Arthur Blair (25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950), better known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English novelist and essayist, journalist and critic. His work is characterised by lucid prose, awareness of social injustice, opposition to totalitarianism, and outspoken support of democratic socialism.

I certainly expected better from Penguin. This 4 1/2" x 7" pamphlet has the quality of something printed on an office laser printer.. The utter lack of sensitivity to the typeset reflects the contemporary lack of understanding of the purpose of typeset...readability. The computer allows unskilled office help to cram aany number of words onto a page. At that rate, they might have taken four more pages tto crush War and Peace onto the same pages..

I'll go online and download a free PDF, which cannot be any less able to be read by mature eyes. This is thoughtless and does not reflect well on the writing.

An interesting essay. It is not a book. Orwell was a fantastic observational writer and his use of language always phenomenal. Whether you are a fan of Orwell, or not, this is a fascinating essay (two parts) that sill has relevance today.

May have been written in 1940 - but sounds like 2017 as far as the English Language is concerned.
Today I don't think they'd let him publish this - not politically correct!

Want to understand why the world is turning in the direction it is? This short work will do more to enlighten you than all the news networks in New York.

George Orwell, what can I say? He sure has predicted the future. . .

Properly packed, even for overseas shipment. Small pamphlet, but Orwell was a heavyweight! Every politician should read and memorize this.

All as promised
Anyone familiar with Orwell won't be disappointed. He is succinct and insightful. The exposure of political jargon is worth the price of the book alone.
