A collection of articles by international scholars and writers, including a one-time Portuguese foreign minister, this is a useful, if uneven, introduction to the revolution that was preceded by the gradual weakening of the old dictatorship and the growing opposition within the army. It was an odd and joyous revolution that, after April 1974, first turned radical, then conservative, but that did allow for a transition from repression to democratic freedom. The emphasis is properly.
