This book contains only basic, general information. But it still convenient and helpful to have that information in one place. I still have questions that remain unanswered, because this book does not provide the answers to specific questions. However, this book is time saving. Not everybody wants to go on the internet and search for the answers to questions. The social security website has articles you can read, but that takes time too. The easy way is to read this book.

Not a single insight in this book. Don't waste your money. Read any website or free government brochure and you will find the same pedestrian information. If you must educate yourself, get one of the 'Dummies' books and it has 10 times the useful information.

I work in the financial planning field and it's good to have a very clear and concise book that provides much of the details of how social security retirement, disability, survivors, and medicare work. Most of this info you could also pull from the social security website (Although with a bit of work). There's also some tricks about social security that I'm not sure they mentioned in the book, such as file and suspending benefits.

If you don;t have it those especially nearing retirement ... it is a must. We must take care of ourselves, I was surprised how much the SS office didn't seem to know. How about thousands of dollars you could be collecting BUT SS won't (for what ever reason) doesn't tell us!

This book introduced me to how to "claim and suspend" retirement benefits. A higher wager earner can claim benefits at full retirement age; the other spouse then claims dependents benefits (which are often higher than the spouse's benefits); and then the higher earning spouse suspends his/her claim. The result is more money in your pocket. This advice by itself made the book worth the price. Because the book is clearly written and contains a wealth of useful information, I recommend it.

Glad I started reading this stuff a decade before I plan to retire...... There is a special circle in hades for the folks who came up with this obtrude and concocked rules. Get this book at the library and several others..... then win the lottery.
I learned a lot from this book. Especially the advantage of waiting until you are 70 to draw Social Security. It's information on Medicare is critical in that there are many severe penalties if not handled properly.
