I bought the Tarascon Internal Medicine & Critical Care Pocketbook at the advice of my Residency Program Director. As an Internal Medicine resident, I would give it 2 thumbs up. An essential pocket book to carry around. It really is an amazing book. The tables are very easy to interpet, and there is a wealth of information about all the common diseases seen in a hospital setting.

I bought this book because it was required by my preceptor for my MICU rotation. My preceptor specifically cited this book and that it had to be the current edition - prices were astronomical for the 5th ed of this pocket-sized book, either new or used.
Recently, on a whim, I was at a university book store in the health sciences section and I spied this book Lederman's Internal Medicine and Critical Care Pocketguide (Lederman's Internal Medicine & Critical Care Pocketguide) which is the SAME with the exception of the cover image but it costs about 60% less than I paid for this book. Apparently, the publisher changed (was Tarascon, now Sanford Guide), otherwise, it appears that the books are identical.

I am only in my 3rd week of ICU rotation as an intern. This book is amazing. It touches on every single topic you can think of. The back of the book is great as it lists over 100 drugs that are common to use and gives doses, indications, side effects very briefly. It has workup, dx, treatment and even vent management. The size is great too. A very good thing to have in your pocket as I imagine it is great for floors too.

You already know most of the things you need during your days on-call. But time comes when you need to administer an unusual drug or resolve an uncommon condition. Then you'll be grateful you have something like this in your scrubs pocket, so you get all the information you need at a glance. Don't expect literature or explanations, this book is just facts, data and protocols to find the best answer to a challenge. It has a great amount of scores, protocols and tables to summarize the information that other books put in pages of time-consuming text.

Either if you are an Internist or if you work in other medical specialty (i.e. Nephrology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology...) where you have to face conditions out of your clinical expertise, you'll find this book very useful for your daily tasks.

J. Palacios, MD. Intern in Cardiology.
