Charles Edward Hamm (April 21, 1925 – October 16, 2011) was an American musicologist, writer on music, composer, and music educator. He also was one of the founders of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM). Born in Charlottesville, Virginia, Hamm graduated from the University of Virginia in 1947 where he was a member of the Virginia Glee Club.

Charles Hamm, who helped establish the field of American popular music history with two books that have become standard texts, died on Oct. 16 in Lebanon, N. H. He was 8. After beginning his career as a specialist in Renaissance music, Mr. Hamm became frustrated with the condescension of his fellow musicologists toward the popular music of their own time. He began to write and lecture on the subject. Mr. Hamm’s books also included Irving Berlin: Songs From the Melting Pot (1997), for which he received a Special Achievement Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, or Ascap, in 1998.

Lieutenant General Charles R. Hamm (born December 23, 1933) served as the eleventh Superintendent of the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Hamm was born on December 23, 1933 in Little Rock, Arkansas, and graduated from Kemper Military School, Boonville, Missouri, in 1951. He earned a bachelor's degree from the United States Military Academy in 1956 and a master's degree in political science from Auburn University in 1969.
