Quantitative methods specifically tailored for the marine biologist. Marine biologists, regardless of their level of experience, will also discover new approaches to quantitative analysis tailored to the particular needs of their field.

Quantitative methods specifically tailored for the marine biologist.

Theauthor combines common quantitative techniques with recent advancesin quantitative methodology and then demonstrates how thesetechniques can be used to study marine organisms, their behaviors, and their interactions with the environment.

The spatial structure of communities has recently gained much attention in ecology.

Hoboken (New Jersey): Wiley-. Quantitative analysis of the flushed stomach contents showed a wide degree of food overlap between the species. The spatial structure of communities has recently gained much attention in ecology. Spatial structure comprises an important element in communities, but the literature lacks a thorough investigation about possible among-organism or among-ecosystem differences in the degree of spatial structure.

Bakus (2007) stated that DCA gives a slightly more realistic portrayal of intertidal community structure than NMDS . Biodiversity is a word recently introduced by experts in the field of biology.

Bakus (2007) stated that DCA gives a slightly more realistic portrayal of intertidal community structure than NMDS, but recognised that this may not be the case in other communities. By contrast, Minchin (1987) considered NMDS applied with the Bray–Curtis dissimilarity coefficient to be the most robust and effective of the compared methods (PCA, PCoA, DCA and NMDS). This word became more meaningful after Edward O. Wilson of Harvard University introduced it in a book entitled Biodiversity, an extension of biological diversity, in 1989.

Quantitative Analysis of Marine Biological Communities : Field Biology and Environment.

Quantitative methods specifically tailored for the marinebiologistWhile there are countless texts published on quantitative methodsand many texts that cover quantitative terrestrial ecology, thistext fills the need for the special quantitative problemsconfronting marine biologists and biological oceanographers. Theauthor combines common quantitative techniques with recent advancesin quantitative methodology and then demonstrates how thesetechniques can be used to study marine organisms, their behaviors, and their interactions with the environment. Readers learn how tobetter design experiments and sampling, employ sophisticatedmathematical techniques, and accurately interpret and communicatethe results. Most of this text is written at an introductory level, with a fewtopics that advance to more complex themes. Among the topicscovered are plot/plotless sampling, biometrics, experimentaldesign, game theory, optimization, time trends, modeling, andenvironmental impact assessments.Even readers new to quantitative methods will find the materialaccessible, with plenty of features to engage their interest, promote learning, and put their knowledge into practice:* One or more examples are provided to illustrate each individualquantitative technique presented in the text* The accompanying CD-ROM features two multimedia programs, severalstatistical programs, help to run complex statistical programs, andadditional information amplifying topics covered in the text* References lead readers to additional information to pursueindividual topics in greater depthQuantitative Analysis of Marine Biological Communities, with itsextensive use of examples, is ideal for undergraduate and graduatestudents in marine biology. Marine biologists, regardless of theirlevel of experience, will also discover new approaches toquantitative analysis tailored to the particular needs of theirfield.

The text provides very basic descriptions of field techniques with little attention to detail. The reader is very often referred to older statistics texts instead of given descriptions on how to apply statistical procedures to marine biological community studies. I gained almost nothing from this text.
