I am a student in a Peace Studies program and while Galtung is considered a father of the field, I was unimpressed with his book. He has a condescending writing style which was off-putting. But more problematic was his argument that all conflicts could be positively transcended. For instance, he thought that segregationists' decision to send their children to private schools, to avoid having their kids go to school with blacks, was "positively transcending" the issue in the 1960s. His approach feels mathematical in that it may have some internal logic but lacks any heart.

I am a conflict resolution student at Portland State University. This book is one of the texts that we use in our class. Conflict and negotiation are an everyday part of life and tools to help us to resolve these problems will make our lives so much simpler. I found this book to be an answer to my problems and a creative way to view solutions to conflict. This book gives us ways to apply theories to problem solving. It is a very important and valuable book and belongs in a=everyone's library.
