The privatisation of mandatory retirement income protection: International perspectives. Public pensions privatisation in Western Europe has been seen as being part of a broader programme of welfare retrenchment, informed by neoliberal values, that will intensify poverty among future generations of pensioners. The book acknowledges the usefulness of financial education programs as a means of improving individuals’ rationality. However, it contends that rationality is in the end bounded and that individuals’ decision-making process will inevitably be dominated by the use of rules of thumb.

The Privatization of Mandatory Retirement Income Protection : International Perspectives. Covers various pension arrangements from a multidisciplinary perspective. by Glenn Drover and Mark Hyde. By reviewing the way conventional state retirement pension programs have been affected by privatization, Hyde (social policy, U. of Plymouth, UK), Dixon (publication management, U. of Plymouth) and Drover (social work, U. of Dalhousie, Halifax) make a significant contribution to the task of analyzing contemporary welfare pluralism and the extent to which it has fostered privatization. They look at global patterns of provision and at case studies in Chile, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Hungary and France. The authors conclude that, rather than a uniform replacement of state social security programs with commercially managed retirement accounts, privatization is part of a complex pattern of retirement income protections.
