Robert Levine offers readers an incisive new take on the mindsets of those who prod, praise, debase, and manipulate others to do things they never thought they’d do†and are sometimes later sorry they did. He takes a hands-on approach by attending training sessions for magicians honing their craft and by taking jobs as a door-to-door salesman and a used car salesman. Levine explores the remarkable effect and power of subtlety on effective persuasion, the great illusion of personal vulnerability, and the unlikely similarities across a wide range of persuasive strategies, from parents to con.

Levine, Robert V. The power of persuasion : how we’re bought and sold, Robert V. I use the term persuasion in its broadest sense in this book. By it, I refer to the psychological dynamics that cause people to be changed in ways they wouldn’t have if left alone. p. cm. Includes bibliographical references and index. ISBN 0-471-26634-5 (cloth). The term serves as an umbrella that encompasses a number of related concepts in psychology: basic processes such as inuence, control, attitude change, and compliance; and more ominous-sounding extremes like mind control and brainwashing.

“The psychology of persuasion emanates from three directions: the characteristics of the source, the mind-set of the target person, and the psychological context within which the communication takes place.” Thus begins this revelatory and sobering treatise on the ways humans fool themselves and others. A professor and practicing psychologist for 40+ years, Levine signed up to experience firsthand the persuasive techniques of people like car dealers, door-to-door salesmen (Cutco knives), and cult leaders (the Moonies). One of his key insights is that no one is impervious; we are all susceptible. The persuasiveness triad: “perceived authority, honesty, and likability.” Americans are particularly susceptible to the authority symbols of titles, clothing, and luxury cars (see: current US president). Decisive, swift talkers are no more sure of their facts than more hesitant counterparts, but they create an impression of confidence that audiences perceive as more expert and intelligent. The more jargon you use and the less a jury understands a witness, the more convincing she appears.
Aside from the dismaying news that we’re all patsies waiting to be taken, the book is full of entertaining, insightful stories on scoundrels running from psychics to gurus. Moonies recruit in a trademark sequence of “pickup, first date, love bomb”, creeping up on victims with imperceptible subtlety that ultimately engulfs them. Levine’s account of the 10-step method of car salesmen was particularly revelatory and unsettling in the frankness of its manipulation.
The most gripping part of the book was Levine’s depiction of the final hours of the Jonestown cult of Jim Jones, during which 900 members committed suicide by drinking cyanide-laced Kool-Aid, even after witnessing their own infants’ agonizing death throes. To read the transcript of the recording of those hours, and how people just like you and me were rooting for their own demise out of loyalty to a demented and manipulative leader, is to understand how tyranny works, and how it is happening right here, right now.

Interesting read that opens your mind on how as a society we truly are "bought and sold". The conditioning of the mind to buy is everywhere, in movies, on YouTube, on Instagram etc. This books explains how even the "best sales people" can be sold. If you are in sales or motivated to change your outlook on how everyone is persuaded to make a decision regardless of what it relates to...pick up this book!

If you like books on influence that have a strong academic foundation and plenty of real world examples, you'll like this one. And I loved reading it.

Just before starting to write this review, I saw something that illustrates how each of us often sees certain things differently. Another reviewer believed the book's example of a car dealer's sales process lacks the details a reader needs to design a sales process. That example is precisely the one I'd decided to mention to you.

Levine uses ten pages to detail this nine-step process. It's a terrific, practical example of getting the customer to make a series of small commitments that greatly increase the likelihood of a sale. You'll get enough info about each step and the overall process to adapt to your sales system to the extent you want. Most of us will choose to borrow parts of this and other processes you read about. One reason is that this particular process included unsavory steps.

Sure, it will take some work and thinking on your part to improve your sales process. That's part of customizing sales systems so they work best for you.

Interestingly, the book gives the real name (Mike Gasio of Fresno, CA) of the super-slick salesman...and notes that he left the auto sales business and became a teacher and counselor for at-risk young people. Mike now uses the same process of gradually increasing commitments to help these troubled youngsters make healthy changes in their lives. What a great story. And illustration of how we can effectively adapt persuasion tools to create either sleazy or healthy results. Once we have the information...the choice is ours.

One of my favorite books on persuasion.

...my only complaint is that it is strikingly similar to 'Influence' by Cialdini (which is excellent and, of course, a classic). Too many examples from that book also appear here. If you haven't read 'Influence', however, you are likely to enjoy "The Power of Persuasion" much more than I did. In either case, you can consider this book as an investment, since you won't be an easy prey for advertisement manipulations anymore. And if you think you are not gullible to ad claims, you are the perfect victim and should definitely read either book.

This book surprised me at how good it was. It changed my whole perception on marketing and sales.

As Mark Helprin noted in "Monday" in _The Pacific and Other Stories_, we've become a nation of advantage-takers, where someone who doesn't squeeze every penny out of his mark is himself a sucker. In Levine's superb book, he helps the reader arm him- or herself with knowledge of some of the strategies and tactics purveyors of all sorts of things - from consumer goods to salvation - use against those of us who assume we're walking into such situations evenly matched. As someone who has spent his career in corporate procurement (and who wrote his thesis on advertising) I can attest that Levine is spot on with his cautionary analyses. Read this book carefully and pass it along to others, especially the young who may not have built up their defenses against some of the tactics described herein. If nothing else, at least you will recognize what game is being played with you when it happens.
