NICOLAS ROCHE was born in 1984 and became a professional cyclist in 2004 with the Cofidis team. Inside the Peloton was a very good book, I enjoyed the reading and found it to be a page turner (not hard to stay focused).

NICOLAS ROCHE was born in 1984 and became a professional cyclist in 2004 with the Cofidis team. After two years with Crédit Agricole, he joined AG2R-La Mondiale in 2009 and is now the team leader. What I liked best, besides all the very interesting information, was that I feel like I really got to know the author, Nicolas Roche, better through my reading (a rider I did not know much of anything about). I will warn that this book does contain some brief expletives, but I would not say excessively.

Nicolas Roche has a famous surname to all fans of cycling. Now a major contender for a podium finish in a grand tour, in the award-winning Inside the Peloton Nicolas tells in full the story of life as a professional cyclist and of the remarkable events that have brought him this far. The son of legendary Irish and World Champion Stephen Roche, Nicolas had to fight to make it as a professional and even harder to make his mark as his own man in this toughest of competitive sports. His rise up the ranks has been meteoric, with top 15 finishes in both the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España, but his attitude to his chosen profession has remained undimmed.

This book is about an Irish Cyclist, Nicholas Roche, son of the only Irish Tour De France winner, Stephen Roche, and his tale of how he got to be such a big name in cycling. At the start of the book, he tells of how his parents met and all about his Dad’s success. He talks about growing up and how close he is to his sister, Christel. Nicholas didn’t have the easiest childhood, changing from Irish to French schools, as his family were constantly on the move. He was mad into soccer and rugby but tore a ligament in 1998 which ended those sports, but started his cycling career.

Nicolas Roche has created an outstanding description of his life and mission to excel in professional cycling. This includes a well-written and fascinating description of his family, his early years, and his introduction to cycling.

His description of his entry into the professional peleton includes insights into the stress of training, nutrition, mental preparation and the combination of life challenges and professional contract arrangements.

Nicolas Roche has most transparently and honestly described both his mistakes as well as his successes. He also reveals an impressive, dedicated, focused character. I will follow him closely through his career ahead.

I believe that any reader who has appreciated the books of David Millar, Cadel Evans, Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish, and others will find this among the best. Also, I believe the reader will appreciate a perspective from this book that is quite unique.

As a mega cycling fan, I have been collecting books on the topic for a couple years now. Inside the Peloton was a very good book, I enjoyed the reading and found it to be a page turner (not hard to stay focused). What I liked best, besides all the very interesting information, was that I feel like I really got to know the author, Nicolas Roche, better through my reading (a rider I did not know much of anything about). I will warn that this book does contain some brief expletives, but I would not say excessively. I would certainly recommend Inside the Peloton to cycling fans or Roche fans (either generation). This book will remain on my shelf as a good resource, as Roche included his diaries from several Tours throughout the pages.
Side note: My edition is the 1st, 2011 one

He's barely got hair on his peaches and this is a "Life" story? Way to try to make a buck!
