Edmund Hillary (left) and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay reached the 29,035-foot summit of Everest on May 29, 1953, becoming the first people to stand atop the world's highest mountain. Our climbers were all chosen as potential summiters," recalls George Band, 73, who was one of the party.

On May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary and his sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first human beings to conquer Mount Everest, the highest place on earth. But who was Tenzing? What was the trajectory from the Yak pastures of Solo Kum to the heroes' reception at Buckingham Palace and how did he see it? How did he view his own illiterate and primitive background?

Sir Edmund Hillary gets all the glory for being the first man to summit Mount Everest, but there was another man, Tenzing Norgay, who was more than just along for the ride. Though Edmund Hillary's name is synonymous with summiting Everest, there was someone else he couldn't have done it without.

Reading is great, excellent story, but the book doesn't anything like on the picture, it has no cover and is dirty.

What I found really refreshing about Tenzing's book was his honesty. He tells of his time in New Delhi when he would point out Mount Everest to tourists. Many guides would point to a nearer peak which looked far more impressive than Everest, but Tenzing would always indicate the correct one. He also is quite frank about wishing that he had successfully climbed the mountain with the earlier Swiss expedition, who he felt had a better attitude towards the Sherpas than the British did.
