A well researched, well written book for Olmsted enthusiasts. Because the text is somewhat dense and it doesn't have fun, colorful illustrations, it may not be right for someone who wants a introduction to the subject. Anyone with ambitions to be an authority on Olmsted should take this as an essential work on America's most celebrated landscape architect.

This book excells every other book written about Olmsted. It is not only full of details unavailable elsewhere but it has the flavor of a careful and evenhanded researcher.

This book - used - has been very useful for the purpose for academic teaching. arrived in it due time.

This is a very scholarly work, but also beautifully written and engaging. When this first came out, it was reviewed as the definitive biography on FLO. Although more 'popularly' written subsequent biographies have come out, they haven't added in any significant way to Roper's scholarship. While he is best known as a landscape architect, he had an interesting and varied career, including as a war correspondent during the civil war, before he found his calling.

Very dull reading, and not many pictures. Better to get Frederick Law Olmsted: Designing the American Landscape (Universe Architecture Series) by Charles Beveridge, Paul Rocheleau, and David Larkin.
