Designers have preferences, like modern over postmodern, serif over sans serif, decorative over minimal, but designers could not be engaged in design practice if they did not love design.

Designs featured include the iconic CBS eye, the stark Kodak identity, the Coca-Cola bottle, and, of course, The Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers album cover. Includes contributions from Alissa Walker and others. On list of Books by Steven Heller.

That's the question that I Heart Design aims to answer. Heller also asked them to explain why these particular pieces move their souls. Steven Heller, a former art director at the New York Times, asked 80 experts in the field - including designers, typographers and academics - to each pick an influential example of graphic design that resonates beyond the context in which it was made and place it within the historical framework of the discipline.

I Heart Design is a collection of “favorite” designs as selected by 80 prominent graphic designers, typographers, teachers, scholars, writers and design impresarios. Designers have preferences, like modern over postmodern, serif over sans serif, decorative over minimal, but designers could not be engaged in design practice if they did not love design. The reasons for such a charged emotion varies from individual to individual, but there are certain commonalities regarding form, function, outcome, and more. Design triggers something in all of us that may be solely aesthetic or decidedly content-driven, but in the final analysis, we are drawn to it through the heart.

Designs featured include the iconic CBS eye, the stark Kodak identity, the Coca-Cola bottle, and, of course, The Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers album cover.

I have to say I'm a fan of Steve Heller. And a little envious of his acquaintances... Gee, tell me somebody else who's friends with Sagmeister, Schwast, Glaser... this guy is incredible!

Regarding the book, Heller conscripted his friends to single out their favorite design piece. Some classics appeared, obviously, and some shady ones as well, what is great. As a designer, it's really fun to see what other designers like, and see how most of the choices relate to the actual work produced by them. Baantjes, for example, cites a 16th century mosque as her favorite piece of design - totally in line with her virtuoso style.

So, Steve, another one to you man, congrats!

Not a very good book. Poorly laid out, uninteresting designs and the artwork and fonts are boring. Funny, given the title of the book.

this has one of the most diverse selections by designers that I have ever seen. It includes the typeface used in "The Prisoner", the Kodachrome package, the buffalo nickel, and so much more, as well as the expected, but welcome, pieces by Milton Glaser, Saul Bass, et al. I would like to have seen Rene Magritte credited for the original inspiration behind the CBS eye logo, then to Brodovitch, then to Golden, but this is not an art history book, that requires the full identification of visual sources. From the hundred or so books that Steven Heller has published, this must surely be in the top ten list of "most delighful."
