One person found this helpful. I planned to read every word when the Roots section at the beginning of the book attributed a universal outlook to the independent spirit of the artist.

Charles de Tolnay, born Károly von Tolnai (May 27, 1899 – January 17, 1981), was a Hungarian art historian and an expert on Michelangelo. According to Erwin Panofsky, he was "one of the most brilliant art historians" of his time. De Tolnay was born in Budapest. He was the son of Arnold von Tolnai, an official of the Hungarian administration

This book is really beautiful and unique. Lots of extreme close ups and details from many classic Bosch paintings. My only complaint is that most of them are in black and white, only some are in color. Other than that this book is high quality and has some really unique fold-over pages and other neat layout and book binding things.

Of the two Bosch books I ordered (the other being, Hieronymus Bosch (Master Artists Library)), this was by far the better.
  • Agarus
A wonderful book, still one of the best written about Bosch ! Deep analyses of the painter's art, a lot of information about his works, and all that in a very communicative style !
  • Tekasa
Still, after many years from first edition, very good book!

The copy I have was printed in Germany, copyright 1965, with first published in English 1966 at the beginning of the book. On page 50 I found a Preface from 1937 and a comment by Charles de Tolnay dated 1966 about new photographs of the works, but "we felt justified in retaining the original text unaltered." I planned to read every word when the Roots section at the beginning of the book attributed a universal outlook to the independent spirit of the artist. The idea of drawing "inspiration from the indigenous spirit of his country" (p. 11) for a Dutch landscape that "unfolds itself in a sweeping sense of hitherto unknown breadth, through which wafts a breeze never felt before, no longer hemmed in by the traditional backcloth and wings of rocks and hills" (Ibid.) strikes me as ironic in 2011 when the record tornados are making modern life as sensational as Bosch paintings.
